One Day at a Time: Learning to Heal Slowly

A Morning That Stopped Me in My Tracks

Some mornings, even getting out of bed feels impossible. Today, I woke up dizzy, lightheaded, my hands cramped—I barely stand. I had to force myself back to bed and stay still until I rest. Moments like these are a reminder. Mental and physical health are deeply connected. Sometimes our bodies are telling us to slow down, rest, and take life one step at a time.

When Life Feels Heavy

Lately, I’ve been in a very difficult place. Evenings at home can feel heavy, and sleep is a constant struggle. My mind races, replaying hurtful moments from the past, leaving me feeling weak, unworthy, and overwhelmed. On good days, I manage to find small moments of calm. But, at my lowest points, I question whether I can handle life’s challenges.

Over the summer, having my daughter around gave me purpose and a sense of grounding. Her presence distracted me from these darker thoughts. Now, financial stress and other pressures weigh on me. I often feel alone and unsure of how to cope. I’ve tried small coping strategies—keeping busy, talking with supportive people—but the struggle persists.

Taking Small Steps to Heal

To care for myself, I’ve started taking deliberate steps. I am using medication to help with sleep. I go outside to walk and meditate. I allow myself to cry when I need to. Writing about my experience is also part of that process—acknowledging the pain, confronting it, and finding a path ahead.

I want to share some advice I’ve learned along the way: take things slowly. Don’t rush. Sometimes your body and mind are telling you to pause. Allow life to unfold one day at a time. Tackle challenges one problem at a time. Focus on your mental and physical health above everything else. Healing is not linear. Every small act of self-care is a step ahead. This includes meditation, walking, talking to a professional, taking medication, or even crying.

Words I Want You to Hear

I am not where I want to be yet, but I know things will get better. Time is the master of everything. Loving yourself in small ways, even when the weight of the world is on your shoulders, is essential.

If you’re reading this and feel the same heaviness, know this: you are not alone. It’s okay to struggle. It’s okay to rest. It’s okay to ask for help. One day at a time, we can find strength—even when everything feels broken.
