More Than One Surgery, But One I’ll Never Forget

Daily writing prompt
Have you ever had surgery? What for?

As a nurse who works in the operating room, I’ve seen countless patients get spinal anesthesia. They are calm on the outside. Yet, they are unsure of what’s happening beneath the drape. But nothing prepared me for the moment I became the patient myself.

I’ve had several surgeries: dental extractions, D&Cs, and a lipoma removal — but the most unforgettable was my C-section. I was induced, and I’ll be honest — the contractions from that induction were intense and difficult. Looking back, I would gently suggest any woman to think carefully before choosing induction.

When it came time for the C-section, spinal anesthesia was my reality. And wow… what an experience. I didn’t feel the injection at all — smooth as silk. But the tingling sensations, the loss of control, and the moment I thought my leg was bent (when it wasn’t!) — that was a whole new level of awareness. Medicine truly is fascinating when you’re on the other side of the gown.

It gave me a deeper respect for the patients I care for every day. There’s nothing quite like experiencing what you once only observed.”
